Building Up To Bolton

The season is coming together quite nicely at the moment. Aside from some super stiff calf muscles from running too hard on the flat I’ve managed to remain pretty much injury free. My mileage for both running and cycling is well ahead of last year (we’ll skate over the swimming, as usual) and the events are starting to line up:

  • Sunday 24th April, Wrynose or Bust, a 117 mile cycle sportive in the southern Lake District;
  • Sunday May 15th, Howgills half marathon, a proper hilly offroad half;
  • Sunday 22nd May, Southport Olympic Distance Triathlon, first of the season;
  • June 5th, Bala Half Ironman Triathlon

That leaves a gap of six weeks between Bala and Ironman UK. I have been toying with the idea of repeating “A Day in the Lakes” on 26th June, but this is a really tough half ironman so might need to look for either a decent sportive, or another Olympic Distance event around the same date.

I have past form with Wrynose: awful weather on both occasions that I’ve done it and a mechanical after 105 miles putting me out. Hopefully I’ll have better luck this time as the route is a lovely one. Whatever, my cycling is in better shape at this time of year than it’s been for a while so this will be a good test.

I haven’t done the Howgills Trail Race before and it’s one I’m really looking forward to. The Howgill Fells have notoriously steep sides which will be a bugger to climb up, but once up on the tops you can walk for miles without losing much altitude on lovely open grassland.

22nd May will be my second Southport Triathlon. Last time I came within a whisker of a PB for the distance. So, as it’s a flat and fast course I’ll be hoping for good conditions in which to have another stab at getting closer to my dream of a sub 2hr 30min Olympic Distance.

I’ve raced both Olympic and Half Iron distances at Bala before, and it’s a lovely place to do a triathlon (see my favourite triathlons). It’s been a while since I’ve done the half (July 2010) and last time I had some mechanical issues with my gears costing me a few minutes. Even so, I was pretty pleased with my time of 5:39:46 which is only 4 minutes outside my PB for the distance. With good conditions and a bit of luck I’ll hope to beat that time.

I’m open to suggestions for another sportive or triathlon in late June.
