Just when I’m thinking I need to up the ante with racing and training up pops an email in my inbox informing me that the Bigland or Bust sportive that I had intended to ride at the end of April has been cancelled. The organiser cited lack of advance entries as the reason. Having entered for the last 5 years in a row I can honestly say it wasn’t through lack of support from me!

This has left a bit of a hole in my calendar as I actually haven’t entered any events at all prior to Ironman UK in July. This is quite unlike me as I usually like a well ordered race calendar. Alternatives for the Bigland or Bust are the Tour de Yorkshire sportive or the Manchester – Chester – Manchester which is a century ride over reasonable terrain. Organised by Torelli, who also ran the Jodrell Bank that I did last month, and based at Poynton High School is definitely favourite, I think.

But what about triathlons? I’m thinking that I really ought to support the new Lancaster based half Ironman, the Epicman on 11th June. The bike course is a real tough proposition and being 5 weeks before IMUK this would be my last race before the big one. A bonus is the entry fee of just ?60 which is the cheapest middle distance triathlon I’ve seen for a long time. I best get my entry in.

This leaves a gap in May. Do I do a couple of tough sportives, or an early season triathlon. I’ve done the Southport Triathlon a couple of times in May and it’s a good fast Olympic distance but it is rightly growing in popularity and has sold out. So that’s a no go. Alternatives in the north of England seem thin on the ground apart from the Wetherby Triathlon at the end of May. I’m tempted by the Grafman middle distance triathlon in Cambridgeshire on the 21st May. Apparently nearly sold out so I need to get my finger out!

Of the sportive options for May nothing really stands out although the Wiggle Durham Dynamo could be a possibility. Whatever, I need to decide fairly quickly as I seem to be hanging on too long these days and missing out on events as they sell out.
