The Ying and Yang of being injured

Depending on the type of injury, being injured is not necessarily a huge disaster. While I wouldn’t wish achilles tendinitis on anyone, it hasn’t stopped me from riding my bike and, more importantly, has given me more time in the pool. Looking at my stats for 2017 I have run less than half the distance than this time last year, and most of that was achieved in the first 3 months. On the other hand, I have already swum further than I did in the whole of 2016 (or 2015 and 2014 for that matter). What’s more, my confidence in the water has improved and I’m slowly getting a little bit quicker. I have even done a few openwater sessions as the outdoor swim season starts. I haven’t felt this positive about my swim in years!

On the running front, things are looking up. After almost a month of not running at all I have managed 3 short runs without any reaction from the achilles, so hopefully I can start to return to a more normal schedule. I need to, as after a spring of cancelled cycle sportives my race season finally kicks off with a mid week outing at the Capernwray Midweek Sprint Series on Wednesday, followed by another local race: the Epicman half iron distance race next Sunday. This will be a big test of both my swimming and my achilles tendon!

The Capernwray sprint will be my first sprint triathlon for 9 years! I’m looking forward to it, but I definitely won’t be racing flat out as I don’t want to provoke my ankle and it is very much a “blow out the cobwebs” session for the bigger race next Sunday. I have always found sprint distance to be really tough as in order to get a decent time you need to be on the absolute ragged edge of your performance limit for the whole race and so any weaknesses, such as my technically terrible swim get ruthlessly exposed. On the other hand, Capernwray, with it’s crystal clear water, quiet country lanes and canalside run is about as relaxing a venue for triathlon as you could hope to find so hopefully it will be an ideal return to racing for me.

You hadn’t heard the latest before going to press then, unfortunately the Capernwray event is off and there will only be a swim on Wednesday.
